Step Out Shot (Stepping Out)
Overview
A step out shot is a lateral move made far outside a bunker to break an angle, surprise an opponent, or gain a new position.
Key Points
- Creates unpredictable attack angles.
- Used to break out of tight pressure situations.
- High risk, high reward movement.
- Works best when opponents are distracted or pinned.
- Can open strong crossfield shots if timed correctly.
Details
A step out shot is when a player moves far out from their bunker rather than staying tight to the edge. The purpose is to break the current angle and attack from an unexpected direction, often catching defenders off guard.
Because wide swings expose the body more than tight moves, timing is critical. Players usually swing wide when they know an opponent is reloading, tucked in, distracted by another lane, or focusing on a different player.
When executed correctly, a wide swing can: Break defensive lockdowns Open new crossfield elimination angles Allow players to counter attack aggressively
When executed poorly, it leads to fast eliminations. Awareness and timing make all the difference.
