Underbore
Overview
Underbore refers to using a bore size slightly smaller than the paintball’s diameter to improve air sealing, velocity consistency, and efficiency.
Key Points
- Produces a tighter fit for improved air sealing.
- Increases efficiency and stabilizes velocity.
- Risk of barrel breaks rises with brittle paint.
- Common among competitive players seeking consistent performance.
- Better for well stored, high quality paint.
- Works best in mild to warm weather conditions.
Details
Underboring involves selecting a bore size that is marginally smaller than the paint diameter. This tight fit improves the seal between paint and barrel, allowing the marker to use air more efficiently and deliver more consistent velocity.
Proper underboring reduces air loss around the ball and keeps shots stable across long strings. Many high level players prefer slight underboring on well stored tournament grade paint.
However, underboring brittle paint can increase the risk of barrel breaks due to friction. Cold weather, poor paint storage, or low quality paint may require switching to matched or overbored inserts.
The ideal underbore configuration balances performance gains with paint fragility and field conditions.
