Barrel Insert
Overview
A barrel insert is a removable internal sleeve used in multi piece barrel systems to change bore size, allowing players to match paint diameter for optimal accuracy and efficiency.
Key Points
- Allows precise bore size tuning for different paint batches.
- Common in systems like Freak, Stella, and modular barrel kits.
- Improves consistency and efficiency by matching paint to bore.
- Made from lightweight materials such as aluminum or stainless steel.
- Available in bore sizes from the high .670s to .690s+.
- Inserts must be kept clean to avoid friction or barrel breaks.
Details
A barrel insert is the removable sleeve inside modular barrel systems that determines the effective bore size. Instead of owning multiple barrels with fixed bores, players can use one barrel back and interchange inserts to fine tune bore diameter for the day’s paint.
Paintball sizes vary based on humidity, temperature, and manufacturing batches, making bore matching essential. Using a properly sized insert increases air efficiency, improves ball flight, and reduces deviations in velocity. Underboring increases sealing but risks friction on fragile paint, while overboring increases forgiveness with inconsistent paint but sacrifices efficiency.
Barrel insert systems remain popular in both competitive and recreational paintball due to their flexibility, affordability, and accuracy benefits. Insert materials include aluminum (lightweight) and stainless steel (more durable and smoother).
Regular cleaning is important. Dirt or paint residue on inserts can increase drag or cause barrel breaks. Proper storage prevents dents that could disrupt shot consistency.
Barrel inserts enable high level players to adapt to changing field conditions with precise control over their marker’s performance.
