Open Side
Overview
The open side is the direction of the field where a bunker offers the least protection, exposing players to more angles and requiring greater discipline to survive engagements.
Key Points
- The side of a bunker with the widest angle exposure.
- Often faces the center or crossfield threats.
- Requires tighter posture and fast decision making.
- Used strategically to create offensive pressure.
- Influences wrap timing, tape control, and survivability.
Details
Every bunker has a “safe side” and an “open side.” The open side is the direction in which the bunker offers the least coverage, making it the most dangerous angle for a player to contest. This side often faces the field’s widest fire lanes or the strongest crossfield threats.
Players must respect the open side by: Staying extra tight Minimizing head checks Managing mask line carefully Using unpredictable timing
Despite its risks, the open side is tactically valuable. Players who learn to effectively pressure or wrap the open side often gain powerful angles that collapse the field.
Understanding open side dynamics also helps teams coordinate pushes, determine where to apply group fire, and decide which bunkers are high risk control points.
