Gap Control

Gap Control reference article.

Overview

Gap control is the skill of watching and shooting through open spaces between bunkers to stop opponents from moving through those openings.

Key Points

  • Prevents opponents from crossing key lanes safely.
  • Relies on watching open spaces, not just bunkers themselves.
  • Forces opponents to stay trapped or delay movement.
  • Used heavily during breakouts and mid-game lockdowns.
  • Increases team field control and denies safe movement routes.

Details

Gap control focuses on monitoring and shooting through the empty spaces between bunkers, known as gaps. These openings are the routes opponents must pass through to move forward, escape pressure, or switch sides. By controlling these gaps, a player limits how opponents navigate the field.

Players practicing gap control rarely stare directly at bunkers. Instead, they focus on the areas where movement is most likely between bunkers, around corners, or at exposed transition points. Shooting these gaps forces opponents to stay hidden or risk being eliminated the moment they move.

Gap control becomes extremely important during breakouts, where catching a player in a gap can lead to early eliminations. It also helps during mid-game when stopping wide pushes or preventing opponents from switching bunkers.

Strong gap control can lock down entire zones of the field with relatively little paint by watching predictable movement channels.
