Vertical Wrap

Vertical Wrap reference article.

Overview

A vertical wrap is an upward or downward bunker wrap where the player uses the top or bottom vertical edge of the bunker to attack angles that cannot be accessed through typical horizontal peeks.

Key Points

  • Targets opponents hiding deep or low behind structures.
  • Used when horizontal edges are locked or unsafe.
  • Relies on posture compression and tight vertical exposure.
  • Effective against mirrored positions focused on side peeks.
  • Requires timing to avoid crossfield punishment.

Details

A vertical wrap is a less common but high value technique where a player shifts their attack from the bunker’s horizontal edges to its vertical axis either wrapping high over the top edge or dipping low along the bottom contour. This exposes opponents to angles they rarely expect, particularly those relying heavily on horizontal control.

Vertical wraps are common around center bricks, tall cans, wedges, and large doritos. The top wrap allows a player to catch opponents tucked low or peeking horizontally. The low wrap counters high posture defenders and players attempting long crossfield lanes.

Because the technique adds vertical exposure, improper execution risks immediate elimination. To use vertical wraps safely, players combine controlled posture, quick profiling, and timing cues based on opponent snapshots, reloads, or communication breaks.
