Radios and Communication Gear

Radios and Communication Gear reference article.

Overview

Radios and communication gear allow teams to coordinate strategies, share information, and manage large scenario games by transmitting voice communication across the field.

Key Points

  • Support real-time coordination in scenario and large-field games.
  • Include handheld radios, headsets, and push-to-talk systems.
  • Often integrated with tactical vests or load-bearing gear.
  • Subject to field rules, local regulations, and channel etiquette.
  • Most common in scenario, woodsball, and command roles.

Details

Radios and communication gear give teams the ability to share information beyond what players can shout or signal visually. Handheld radios paired with headsets and push-to-talk (PTT) units allow players to coordinate flanks, call out opponents, report objectives, and relay field-wide updates, especially on large or complex layouts.

Communication systems are particularly common in scenario events, where commanders and squad leaders manage multiple groups across extended distances. Proper use of radios can improve coordination and situational awareness, but also requires discipline to avoid excessive chatter or confusion.

Radios are often carried in pouches on tactical vests or harnesses, with cables routed under or alongside straps to keep them secure. Earpieces and microphones must be positioned so they do not interfere with mask fit or obstruct movement.

Fields and events may have rules about which frequencies can be used, how many channels are allowed, and whether staff channels must remain clear. In some regions, specific radio bands require licenses. Players should always follow local laws and event guidelines when using communication gear.
