Paint-to-Barrel Match

Paint-to-Barrel Match reference article.

Overview

Paint to barrel match refers to the technical relationship between paintball diameter and barrel bore size, directly affecting accuracy, efficiency, consistency, and paint handling.

Key Points

  • Proper match improves consistency and shot precision.
  • Overbored barrels reduce breaks but decrease efficiency.
  • Underbored barrels improve efficiency but risk barrel breaks.
  • Affected by paint swelling, temperature, and humidity.
  • Modern systems use inserts to fine tune bore matching.

Details

Paint to barrel match is one of the most critical tuning factors in competitive paintball. Because paintballs vary slightly in size based on temperature, humidity, and batch quality, selecting the correct barrel bore ensures optimal shooting behavior. Underboring using a barrel slightly smaller than the paint diameter creates a more controlled, efficient shot but increases the chance of breaks within the barrel. Overboring using a slightly larger bore reduces the chance of breaks but sacrifices efficiency and sometimes accuracy.

Modern barrel systems use swappable inserts, allowing players to match bore size precisely to current paint conditions. A correct match minimizes velocity variance, improves grouping consistency, and ensures smooth acceleration through the barrel.

Elite players perform pre practice and pre game tests using sizers and blow through methods to dial in paint to barrel match for the day’s conditions.
