Long Ball

Long Ball reference article.

Overview

A long ball is a paintball shot fired at extended range, often using arcing trajectories and controlled bursts to reach opponents outside of standard engagement distances.

Key Points

  • Used to reach distant opponents by arcing shots over bunkers or terrain.
  • Less accurate than close or mid range shooting due to drag and paint variability.
  • Useful for pinning players, probing positions, or applying pressure.
  • Requires understanding of velocity, angle, and paint flight characteristics.
  • Often used in woodsball, large scenario fields, or long lane speedball shots.
  • High arc long balls can expose firing players if not timed properly.

Details

A long ball is a paintball shot aimed at targets far beyond typical engagement distance. Because paintballs lose velocity and stability quickly, long balls use higher arcs, controlled burst rhythms, and predictive aiming to reach distant players.

Players may use long balls to harass opponents behind large bunkers, force movement, confirm presence, or deter advances. In woodsball and scenario play, long balls are common due to larger field sizes and varying elevation.

On speedball fields, long balls appear on layouts with stretched coastline lanes or tall bunkers that create long distance sightlines.

Executing an effective long ball requires compensating for paint drop off, crosswinds, air density, and ball to ball inconsistencies. Shot placement becomes more probabilistic than precise.

Long balls are seldom used for guaranteed eliminations but are valuable for pressure management, forcing tucks, and shaping field control.
