Lights and Illumination Gear

Lights and Illumination Gear reference article.

Overview

Lights and illumination gear include marker-mounted lights, navigation beacons, and identification markers used in night or low-light games under specific event rules.

Key Points

  • Provide visibility and target identification in low-light games.
  • Include weapon lights, helmet lights, and small marker beacons.
  • Must comply with field rules and safety guidelines.
  • Can affect concealment, visibility, and game balance.
  • Primarily used in specialized night or scenario events.

Details

Lights and illumination gear are used in specialized night or low-light paintball games where visibility is intentionally reduced. Equipment can include weapon-mounted lights for short-range target identification, helmet or mask-mounted lights for navigation, and small glow markers or LEDs that identify teams, roles, or boundaries.

Because lights significantly change how easily players can see and be seen, event organizers tightly control how and when they are used. Rules may govern maximum brightness, allowed colors, when lights must be turned on or off, and whether certain roles (such as referees or commanders) use specific markers for identification. Some events require that lights be visible at all times for safety, while others limit their use to preserve the intended level of concealment.

Illumination gear also introduces tactical trade-offs. A bright weapon light can help identify targets in dense cover or dark structures but may also reveal the user’s position. Low-output navigation lights or chem lights can make it easier for teammates to track one another without dramatically increasing visibility to opponents. Players and organizers must balance immersion, fairness, and safety when deciding how lights are incorporated into scenarios.

Not all fields or events support night or low-light play, and some venues restrict lights entirely due to local regulations or safety policies. When allowed, lights and illumination gear should always be used according to event guidelines and in ways that do not compromise mask safety or create unnecessary trip hazards with cables or mounts.
